![]() So far I have not found that to be the case. Knowing what matters to you can be a tricky business, but it's worth exploring. I was getting bogged down reading tons of junk that didn't matter. What I thought I missed was a cinematic experience and not reading, but in reality it was a pacing issue. But then I gave it another try and learned to distinguish the backer content (NPCs with gold labels and epitaphs) from the actual game content and it made a drastic difference. Very specifically, I hated the limited voice acting. I decided I missed the modern RPG conveniences, particularly the ones that make the game more immersive. One quick anecdote about my own experience: I disliked the game when I first played it. This can be mitigated somewhat by assembling a party with mostly classes that don't require much micromanagement. It often requires a lot of micromanagement, which some find fun but others not so much. ![]() It's very un-cinematic-no cutscenes, conversations are not animated and voice acting is limited. ![]() On the negative side, there are a lot of modern RPG things that are missing. I also enjoy the mechanics-there's definitely a high level of complexity to the combat mechanics, but outside of that it doesn't get bogged down with too much of what I'll call "mechanics for the sake of mechanics" where there are too many systems that make the game more complicated but not any more fun. I've been a fan of the pacing and level of openness-it's wide enough that doesn't feel super on-rails, but it's narrow enough that it doesn't lose its narrative drive or feel slow or barren. PoE has great writing-both in terms of characters and story, and that is more or less enough on its own to make me love it. I'm actually about halfway through myself so some of this might turn out to be false based on the back half of the game, but I'll get the ball rolling.Īs with just about any game, more than the list of games you've liked it's important to know what specifically you like about those games.
